For about 30 years I have had a keen interest in underground or earth sheltered housing. Several things kept me from building but the good part was I had time to thoroughly research the subject. In the beginning there were few if any choices on construction. Everything available had a flat roof that required partition walls for support or numerous support posts to prevent roof failure. This was not acceptable to my line of thinking. I like big open areas and I wanted flexibility in choosing where to place walls and dividers.
With the dome roof all of this is possible and much more. 20 times stronger than a flat roof with less material is a win-win situation.
With solid financial resources and engineering professionals in place we have started our DEMONSTRATION HOME on a piece of property north of Guelph, Ontario. The land has been purchased and building plans are being drawn up and construction is scheduled to begin no later than June 2004.
The interest in this project is very high, we have contacted several universities and to date Guelph University and Waterloo University are interested in a degree of involvement either as research project or just to observe and record . Their involvement will be updated as we progress. Several publications have been approached with intent to do feature articles on the entire project and there is great enthusiasm. Toronto Star has shown interest and will assign a free lance writer to do an article.
Our plans are to build small communities of underground housing in Canada that will satisfy this growing market. The market is large due to escalating heating costs, energy costs for air conditioning and overall costs of home ownership. An underground home done properly addresses these problems in a most economical way. This type of housing is ideal for Families, Retired persons, commercial buildings and even hog barns. Utilizing this type of structure is limited only by the imagination.
